Wild Gujarat: Lions, Blackbuck & Desert Wildlife

Arrive in Ahmedabad, where a Travel By Twilight representative will welcome you and assist with the transfer to your carefully selected hotel. After check-in, rest following your journey and meet the expedition team for a specialist briefing covering wildlife etiquette, camera protection, safari positioning and the photographic character of the three reserves. The evening concludes with a welcome dinner and an introduction to Gujarat's landscapes and conservation story.

After breakfast, leave Ahmedabad for the Little Rann of Kutch, a vast landscape of salt flats, seasonal wetlands and thorn scrub. Check in at a photographer-friendly wildlife lodge and enjoy lunch before preparing for the first afternoon safari. As the temperature softens, venture across the open terrain in search of Indian wild ass, desert fox, nilgai, cranes, flamingos and birds of prey. Remain in the field through the golden hour, when the horizon, dust and low light create beautifully layered images.

Begin before sunrise and enter the Rann as the first light spreads across the salt desert. Track Indian wild ass herds and photograph their movement against uninterrupted horizons. Depending on current habitat and water conditions, search productive wetlands for flamingos, pelicans, cranes, coursers and raptors. Return to the lodge for breakfast, image backup and rest. The afternoon safari explores a contrasting sector, allowing time for environmental portraits, behaviour and sunset silhouettes before dinner at the lodge.

After breakfast, travel south through rural Gujarat to Velavadar, whose open golden grasslands offer a completely different visual language. Following lodge check-in and lunch, enter the national park for an afternoon session among large blackbuck herds. Photograph mature males, graceful females, courtship behaviour and dramatic running sequences. As evening approaches, watch for harriers returning to the grasslands and remain alert for jackal, nilgai and the possibility of an Indian wolf.

Return to Velavadar at first light, when grassland colours are at their finest and predator activity may be more favourable. Search patiently for wolves while continuing to work with blackbuck behaviour, birds of prey and minimalist landscape compositions. After breakfast, travel to Sasan Gir and check in at a premium wildlife lodge. The evening is deliberately relaxed, allowing time to prepare cameras and discuss the strategy for five upcoming lion safaris.

Enter Gir at dawn for the first dedicated lion safari. Follow forest tracks through teak woodland, acacia scrub and seasonal riverbeds while listening for alarm calls and working with the naturalist to anticipate animal movement. Return to the lodge for breakfast, lunch, rest and image backup. The afternoon safari resumes in softer light, with opportunities for Asiatic lions, spotted deer, sambar, nilgai, wild boar and a remarkable diversity of forest birds.

A second full day in Gir creates the patience and repetition serious wildlife photography requires. Begin with a morning safari in an allocated tourism zone, concentrating on behaviour and environmental compositions rather than rushed sightings. After a restorative midday break, return for another afternoon drive. Alongside lions, remain alert for leopard, striped hyena, golden jackal, marsh crocodile and the forest's rich birdlife. Exact zones and routes are assigned by the authorities and may change.

Set out before sunrise for a final Gir safari, using the accumulated knowledge of the previous drives to pursue stronger compositions and any missed species. Return for breakfast, check out and travel to Rajkot. After hotel check-in, the evening remains relaxed for equipment organisation, a farewell dinner and a final conversation about the journey's most memorable encounters.

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel and complete final equipment and baggage checks. Depending on the confirmed flight or rail schedule, transfer to Rajkot International Airport or the railway station with departure assistance. Guests extending their journey may continue privately to Ahmedabad, Diu or another destination through a bespoke arrangement.
